Sprinkler System Overview

You may only consider your irrigation system when you see those sprinklers in action watering your lawn in the morning! Ideally, your automatic sprinkler system should be an amazing "set it and forget it" feature for your home. But have you ever wondered how your sprinkler system really works? Where does the water come from? How does it reach your home? And ultimately, how does it get to your lawn?

  • Water can be supplied to your home either from a municipal source or through a well located on your property. Typically, the water for homes in your area is delivered via a capacity water main. A smaller supply line connects from this main to your home, where a water meter tracks the gallons of water flowing through into your residence. Your irrigation system is linked to this water supply.

  • A shutoff valve is installed to allow you to turn off the water to your irrigation system independently of your home’s water supply. This is essential for tasks like repairing a sprinkler system under pressure or during emergencies. Local building codes mandate the installation of a backflow prevention device to avoid contamination by irrigation water from flowing back into the main supply line. This can either be a separate device or valves that a built-in backflow prevention feature.

  • Once the water passes through the backflow prevention device, it is under pressure behind the sprinkler system valve.

  • The irrigation controller then sends a low-voltage electrical signal to the valve, enabling water to flow into active zone, watering your lawn.

  • After this zone is complete, the controller switches off and moves to the next zone, repeating the process until your entire lawn is irrigated.
